MINUTES An LDIP conference call was held December 30, 2005 from 1:00 to 2:10 PM Eastern. Attending: Bruce Beckwith Ul Balis Jules Berman Bob Leif Al Floyd Jack Zeineh John Bisosky (spelling?) Sokol Betushi (spelling?) Kemp Watson John Stinson Bily Rhynold (spelling?) Al Floyd Bruce Beckwith moderated discussion of the recent work in DICOM on a pathology image standard. There was general agreement that the LDIP effort and the DICOM effort will be complementary, with the DICOM effort providing image-specific elements that fit into the DICOM structured format, and the LDIP effort providing a defined RDF namespace, with classes and properties for data elements (i.e., an RDF ontology). There was agreement that LDIP will stay informed of the DICOM work and include element tags corresponding to DICOM elements. Bruce will serve as liaison to ensure that the work of the two groups is somewhat coordinated. Some of the limitations of RDF were discussed, particularly in regards to enumerations for complex data types. DAML is an RDF extension that provdies enumerators for complex data types, and I sent around some information on DAML immediately following the conference call. We concluded that we needed to see and discuss the DICOM elements and that we would continue discussing ontology issues. Ilya Goldberg's question (from the prior conference call) about how we should deal with the actual binary image data was tabled because Ilya wasn't in attendance. Immediately following the conference call, Ole Eichhorn, Kemp Watson and Bob Leif had an in interesting exchange of emails on the topic of embedded binaries. Basically, the issue of embedding LDIP metadata into the header of a commonly used image file format keeps coming up, and we need to discuss this at some time. - Jules 12/30/05
